An original first-generation iPhone sold for $190,000 at auction.

(TWN) - An original first-generation iPhone sold for $190,000 at auction.

Someone with huge finances has purchased a piece of digital history after paying $190,000 for a 2007 first-generation iPhone. That is roughly 300 times the original price of the equipment.

Don't expect to make anything close to this amount by selling a 16-year-old smartphone you have stashed someplace in a drawer. The item was factory sealed and in "exceptional condition," according to the description. LCG Auctions reported that the lot's consignor was a member of Apple's engineering team when the iPhone first launched. "Collectors and investors would be hard pressed to find a superior example," noted the auction house.

The lot garnered attention from many parties, with 28 offers submitted, five of which were above $100,000. LCG Auctions recently sold two 8GB models of the first-generation iPhone for $39,000 and $63,000. The fact that this item is a rare 4GB model helps it stand out. Apple only made this variant for two months because customers overwhelmingly preferred a device with twice the storage.
