Trump and Putin to Discuss Ukraine on Tuesday
Washington,March 17, 2025 – U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to speak with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, on Tuesday regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine and efforts to end the conflict.
Following discussions in Saudi Arabia, U.S. officials expressed hope that a ceasefire agreement between Ukraine and Russia could be reached within a few weeks, based on Washington’s proposal to halt the three-year-long war.
"I believe we will be discussing Ukrainian territory and power plants," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One. "I think both Ukraine and Russia have already had significant discussions on these matters. This will be our first direct conversation on the issue, and we will be addressing territorial claims."
While Washington and Kyiv’s European allies are pressuring Moscow to end the war, Putin has not provided a clear response. Instead, he has outlined a series of conditions and raised “serious concerns” regarding the U.S. proposal.
Steve Witkoff, Trump’s envoy who met with Putin for several hours recently, told CNN, "This week’s discussion between the two presidents will be very positive and constructive."
He added, "Perhaps, President Trump genuinely expects some form of agreement in the coming weeks, and I also believe this is a crucial issue."
The talks between Trump and Putin come at a time when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused the Kremlin of not wanting to end the war. Zelensky has stated that before agreeing to any ceasefire, Moscow aims to "improve its position on the battlefield."
